Luxury Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter And Ruskin Private guided Day Tours

These wonderful tours takes us to Hawkshead which is situated in the heart of the Lakes and set in the magnificent vale of Esthwaite. It is a truly historic and wonderful picturesque village, characterized by it’s whitewashed houses, courtyards, alleyways and squares. Wordsworth went to grammar school here and Beatrix Potter house Hilltop is very close by.

We will be visiting John Ruskin’s fantastic house Brantwood on Coniston which has been preserved as a museum. The gardens are very beautiful and well worth a visit.

A day is dedicated to Wordsworth when we will be visiting  Dove Cottage in Grasmere which looks exactly as it did in his time and where his most famous poems were written and we will also go to the accompanying renovated museum which forms part of a new visitor experience which opened in 2021.

Beatrix Potter

Photo of Beatrix Potter

Beatrix Potter day! After breakfast we will make our way to Hill Top, owned by the National Trust, this is the home that inspired Beatrix Potter to create her much loved characters.

Full of her precious things, Hill Top encapsulates her passion that went on to dominate her life, preserving the landscape and culture of the Lakes. From traditional Lakeland furniture, to trophies for her prize-winning Herdwick sheep, Hill Top represents her legacy.

The colourful garden is just as Beatrix knew it. In fact, the house is also just as she left it and gives us a unique insight of her life and times.

For lunch we will discover one of Hawkshead’s many wonderful cafes or pubs.

We will meet up at 2.30 to go around The Beatrix Potter gallery and then walk up to St Michaels and All Angles Church which dates from 1500’s and majestically overlooks the village.

A visit to the Beatrix Potter exhibition at The Armitt Museum in Ambleside this afternoon. There was so much more to Beatrix Potter than the creation of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck. The museum introduces us to the passionate environmentalist and keen farmer. The display of her Fungi watercolours is amazing.

John Ruskin

Brantwood House Coniston Lake

John Ruskin and Brantwood House. After breakfast we will make our way over to Coniston Lake and if the weather is good take the steamer over to Brantwood house ( if not we will drive).

Ruskin’s former home Brantwood incorporates a historic house, gardens, museum and a vibrant centre for the arts. The views of Coniston Lake from the house are stunning.

Lunch will be at the excellent restaurant at Brantwood.

Ruskin was born in 1819 and became one of the greatest thinkers of the Victorian era. He was a man of genius and vision, a painter and poet in his own right as well as one of the most influential social and environmental theorists.

When we return to Coniston village we will visit The Ruskin Museum which was opened in 1901 by his faithful secretary WG Collingwood. It is a memorial to Ruskin’s life, thoughts, art and love of nature.

Rydal Falls, Grasmere, Cumbria

William Wordsworth. Today, after breakfast we will make our way to Grasmere to discover Wordsworth. It is 251 years since the birth of William Wordsworth, yet his works and philosophies are just as relevant today.

Wordsworth and his fellow Romantic poets paved the way for future generations to think about the world differently. This led to the formation of the National Trust in 1895 and laid the foundations for today’s global conservation movement.

Before lunch we are going to visit Dove Cottage which looks exactly as it did in his time and where his most famous poems were written.
We will also go to the accompanying renovated museum which is part of a new visitor experience that re-energises the Wordsworth collection by telling the story of his life and poetry in the place he found “Perfect contentment, unity entire”

From Dove cottage we will walk around Grasmere village and have some lunch before doing the famous ‘coffin route’ walk to Rydal Mount. This is a short walk that circles Grasmere and Rydal water. Taking you high above the fells the walk encounters lovely views of Rydal water and Grasmere.

At Rydal Mount we will stop for afternoon cream tea. It is the historic family home of William Wordsworth and where his family still live and well worth a look around.
