The idiom to ‘ See something through rose-coloured glasses’ began to be used figuratively in the 1850s and means a generally optimistic, positive view of things. The adjectives rosy – rose-coloured have been used since the 17th century to denote ‘hope and optimism’. I suppose the 21st century equivalent is to see the glass half full as apposed to half empty.

I am writing this blog a few days before Christmas 2021. I wanted to end the year on an optimistic rather than a pessimistic note, which is a bit of a challenge. The media, right now, is full of depressing covid news as a lot of countries seem to be heading, yet again, into some sort of lockdown or complicated travel restrictions. The UK hospitality industry is once more thrown into chaos and uncertainty about the future.

I started Avanti Ventures Travel, as a British destination management company, to provide great holiday experiences for domestic and international visitors to Great Britain. Day or half day guided tours, using the best tour guides in the UK, that enhance a visitor’s stay, whether they are interested in historical heritage, authentic cultural experiences, or they want to practice their language skills with like minded people as well as enjoy a great pub meal with a pint of beer. We take away the pain of having to organise things yourself, with the worry that can bring.

Throughout this pandemic we have been lucky, as an industry, to have had some support from government, our national tourism organisation Visit Britain and from destination management organisations such as Cumbria Tourism, which I cannot praise enough for ‘being there’ in so many ways for its members, over the past almost 2 years.

Am I optimistic about 2022? Yes I am! I do not think covid will go away anytime soon, but at some point, we are going to have to learn to live with it and then we will hopefully be able to get on with our lives and businesses. One of my mother’s many sayings was ‘ When you reach the bottom, the only way is up’!!

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy Healthy New Year. I look forward to welcoming some of you on holiday in 2022.
