chichester City and Cathedral tour

Chichester Cathedral from The the Bishops Palace gardens

Chichester Cathedral is a living church that has been at the centre of life in Chichester for over nine centuries. It has been a sacred place of worship since its foundation in 1108 and is the only English Cathedral with a surviving detached medieval Bell Tower.

Start your day with a private guided tour of the Cathedral, this is followed by a special behind the scenes tour that gives you access to places not usually open to the public.

Your private tour of the Cathedral can be a general one, taking in the history, art and architecture or it can be more specialised. For example, are you interested in the English civil war? If you are American would you like to learn more about the Cathedral’s transatlantic ties with this introduction to Chichester’s historic artefacts, stories and noteworthy works of art?

Our private day tour includes an afternoon walking tour of Chichester city centre with an expert Blue/Green Badge guide which will provide a fascinating and informative insight into the history and culture of the city.

Our morning starts with a special private guided tour of Chichester Cathedral. Fine art, medieval wall paintings and sculpture reliefs feature alongside Victorian glass work and contemporary religious art of the highest quality. Your knowledgeable guide will capture your imagination as you tour the cathedral and explore places not usually open to the public.

Walter Hussey was Dean of Chichester Cathedral from 1955-1977. He is known for commissioning modern artists such as Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland and John Piper to create work for the Church and established the foundations for further commissions by his successors. Hussey’s legacy, without doubt, makes a description of Chichester Cathedral’s as “the building the nearest you will get to an ecclesiastical Art Gallery” relevant.

After lunch at one of Chichester’s leading restaurants, we move on to Pallant House Gallery, a short walk away, for a private guided tour. The gallery’s founding collection was bequeathed by Dean Hussey (1909-1985). This strong historic and artistic connection, between the cathedral and the gallery created by Walter Hussey gives us a lot to explore
