2022 marks the 1900th anniversary to commemorate the start of building Hadrian’s Wall in 122 AD. This makes it a perfect year to visit this amazing place. Our 3 day tour ideas take us from west to east, starting in Cumbria and ending in Northumberland.

Each day is packed full of things to see and do, starting with a gradual understanding of how the Wall was built and how it operated and then moving on to visit the forts which came later in the Hadrian’s Wall building programme.

Hadrian’s Wall Tour 1

Banks Turret, Hadrian's Wall

Your driver and Blue Badge Guide will arrived to pick you all up this morning to start your day tour!

The tour starts today at Banks Turret for an introduction to the Wall and its military fortifications. then on to Birdoswald Roman Fort which has so far been partly excavated with remains of granaries, drill hall, gateways and fort walls on view.

Time for lunch at a nice pub then we make our way to Carvoran to see the ‘Edge of Empire’ film in 3D and look around the museum.

Continue on to Cawfields to view Milecastle 42 at close quarters and take in the incredible view across the whole military zone.

On to Steel Rigg to walk a part of the scenic section of the wall towards Housesteads Fort

Museum Vindoland Hadrian's Wall

Today we visit Vindolanda which is an active excavation site. We will go into the Visitors Centre where you can see the amazing array of artefacts found at Vindolanda including the world-famous writing tablets.


We will be stopping at Carrawburgh for the Mithraic Temple, Limestone Corner to see a place where the hardness of the underlying rock defeated the Romans and end the day at Chesters Roman Fort and museum.

Today we go to Corbridge. While not a heavily guarded fortress it was a very busy town and remained so right up to the end of Roman Britain in the early 5th century.

It is now a time capsule of Roman life with lots to visit including the Corbridge Hoard to see the most significant finds in Roman history and the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian’s Wall collections which includes The Corbridge Lion.


A visit to Housesteads Roman Fort, it is the remains of an auxiliary fort on Hadrian’s Wall, at Housesteads, Northumberland
