Chichester, west Sussex, UK

If you are holidaying in South East England or in London and you intend taking a few day trips out of the capital then you need to think about visiting Chichester.

Yes, more well known, familiar sounding places like Bath or Stonehenge are definitely worth exploring but when Chichester is described as “a hidden gem of a city” or as the South’s “best kept secret” then I think you will agree it might be well worth a visit!

Where Is Chichester ?

The lovely city of Chichester is located in the historic county of Sussex, between the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park and Chichester Harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is in the South of England, about 65 miles south west of London, is easily accessible via the major motorway networks of the M3 and M27 and is well served by public transport. As Chichester is under 2 hours from London, it is a great place to visit for a day tour outside the capital.

Is Chichester Worth visiting?

Absolutely! It has it all! Cobbled streets steeped in history, a remarkable 900 year old, Norman cathedral and ancient city walls that date back to the Romans. Important heritage with handsome historic buildings.

The entire centre is a conservation area, and it shows. Idyllic Georgian townhouses compete with 17th-century cottages tucked down lanes, it could almost be a film set! And there are some great postwar properties too. The historic roads out of town, such as Westgate, are also studded with beautiful houses.

Architecture and historical heritage apart, Chichester is also known for being a City of the Arts. It is home to the nationally important Chichester Festival Theatre, one of the UK’s flagship regional theatres with an international reputation for producing work of the highest quality and the internationally recognised Pallant House Gallery.

This fantastic art gallery is housed in what is considered to be one of the most important 18th century townhouses in England and has one of the best collections of 20th-century British art in the world.

A bustling town centre with great shopping and markets, lots of wonderful pubs, restaurants, cafes, tearooms and green spaces are added into this enticing mix to ensure you have a truly memorable visit.
